AWHERO

Eye in the Skies

Rotary Unmanned Air Systems (RUAS) are bringing a new level of capability to civil and military missions. Leonardo’s state-of-the-art, unmanned AWHERO is a versatile dual-use platform that can operate day and night, over land and sea. It is a reliable, cost-effective solution for diverse roles and is the only RUAS in its class designed with safety features such as systems redundancy.

Main Features

Optimised for civil roles

AWHERO can perform a wide range of utility applications including disaster relief, environmental monitoring, firefighting and pipeline or powerline monitoring. It is also an ideal solution for security missions such as traffic enforcement, surveillance, patrol and aerial monitoring of sensitive targets.

Adaptable military asset

Military operators can call on AWHERO to perform a spectrum of battlefield and maritime missions including: Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), force protection, combat support, route clearance, cargo re-supply, anti-piracy, maritime security, and Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) communications relay for other unmanned systems.

Teaming with manned platforms

AWHERO can be teamed with manned aircraft from a permanent shore base or forward deployed operating base. Operating alongside AW159 and/or AW101 helicopters, AWHERO significantly enhances maritime operational effect and tactical reach during littoral and blue-water operations.

Control from the ground

AWHERO is controlled via a Ground Control Station (GCS) and complies with NATO STANAG-4586 standards. It can manage multiple missions during all stages of flight, with combined or independent assets. The GCS enables mission planning/re-planning, mission management and control of sensor payloads. Data, images and video can be transmitted instantly to the GCS and additional terminals.

Flexible sensor capability

Two modular payload bays can carry an array of sensors including radar (such as the Gabbiano TS Ultra-Light), Electro-Optical (EO) / Infrared (IR) and Light Imaging Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), plus advanced communication systems. Payloads can be nose, underbelly or side-mounted.

Advanced technology

Thanks to its modular architecture, AWHERO can interface easily with existing networks to provide live streaming video; radar images; identification of objects, ships, vehicles and people; and Automatic Identification System (AIS) for vessel tracking.
